There’s a clear inclination to underestimate the power of a really great cover letter.
I coach, I prod, I encourage executives to approach a cover letter (and resume!) like they would the discovery stage of a global go-to-market strategy.
So often the very same executives, who would never rollout a new product or division by winging it, discount the importance of a clear tactical plan for their own careers. Winging it is NOT a strategy, it is a waste of time. Identifying stakeholders with the power to hire, the money to pay, and the need for value creation takes time and isn’t considered a “nice to have” in an effective job search strategy.
